Background for the Roy G. Beck CEO Forum

Date and Setting:

(5-24-88) 8 a.m. breakfast, followed by a 25 minute speech beginning around 8:30 a.m. and a 30 minute discussion with the CEOs.

Audience:

David Blake, dean of Rutgers’ Graduate School of Management, says he expects about 50 CEOs and Presidents of major New Jersey companies. Roy G. Beck, who will introduce TBP, is the founder and retired chairman of Ryan, Beck & Co., a very successful investment banking house. The other officers will be from companies in about every field, including industrial, service, banking and high tech firms. Several of the CEOs are apt to be vocally opposed to takeovers and may provide a lively debate.

Important Points:

—Mr. Blake predicts none of the CEOs attending the breakfast will have been at TBP’s speech the day before.

—It’s interesting to note that TBP’s Conference speech on Monday was supposed to be a debate, but no volunteers could be found to go one-on-one. Yet it looks like there will be several CEOs willing to go against TBP for the breakfast, where no press and nobody but their peers will be present.

The breakfast sounds like it could resemble an early morning feeding of the lions, but Mr. Blake assures us it will not get ugly. . .he went so far as to insinuate the ones attending would more resemble house cats. At any rate, our Christian will be heavily armed.
